The beach is closed to visitors for now. On
24 September 2026 the parks service said access to the beach has been temporarily paused to help
protect the sea lion colony. Seal Bay stays open, with a roaming guide on the boardwalk, and
no booking is needed. Several tour listings still describe time on the beach, so read
what to ask your operator before you book.
This is a pause, not a closure of the park. You still see the colony, from above. The guide walks the boardwalk and answers questions, so you still get the explanation a beach tour gave.
The 900 m boardwalk and viewing platforms
The boardwalk is 900 metres there and back. It winds through limestone cliffs and dunes to a set of viewing platforms over the beach and the colony. The whole route is wheelchair accessible.
You set your own pace. Sea lions sleep in the dunes close to the timber, so you often see them before you reach the platforms. Keep your voice low and your flash off.
Hours, tickets and getting there
Seal Bay Conservation Park is on the south coast, about 45 minutes by road from Kingscote. Everything you need to plan a visit is in the table.

The Kangaroo Island Tour Pass covers Seal Bay along with the other parks. It pays off only if you drive yourself to most of them, and on a tour your fare usually includes the entry.
The Australian sea lion colony
Sea lions have used this bay for thousands of years, the parks service says. The species is endangered, and it is one of the rarest seals in the world. Seal Bay is the world's third-largest breeding colony.
Sea lions are eared seals. On land they prop themselves on their front flippers and walk. They spend up to three days at sea fishing, then up to three days ashore to rest and feed their pups. That rhythm is why you always find some on the sand.
Pups and the 18-month cycle
Most seals breed once a year. Australian sea lions breed on an unusual 18-month cycle, so the pupping season moves through the calendar. Pups are generally born any time between January and June, but a given year can differ.
If pups are your reason for going, ask the visitor centre which stage the colony is in before you plan the day around it.

A listing written before the pause may still promise the sand. That is not the operator misleading you; the page has not caught up. Ask these before you pay.
- Ask what happens at the colony now. Expect the boardwalk with the roaming guide.
- Ask how long you get there. Compare it with the table above.
- Ask what replaces the beach time. Some days add a longer stop elsewhere.
- Check your refund window. Most full days refund in full up to 24 hours ahead; the Adelaide trips need 6 days.

Can you still walk on the beach at Seal Bay?
Not at present. On 24 September 2026 the National Parks and Wildlife Service said access to the beach at Seal Bay is temporarily paused to protect the sea lion colony. The park stays open, and you see the colony from the 900-metre boardwalk with a roaming guide.
