Best Time to Visit Kangaroo Island

Any month works, because the island is open all year. What changes is which animals are busy, how warm the water is and how full the ferry gets. Pick the month for the thing you most want to see, then book your Kangaroo Island reservation around it.

Start with your reason for going. Each answer below is a season, and the rest of the guide explains it.

For the wildlife

Winter, June to August: joeys, whales and birds, and fewer people.

For sea lion pups

Any time January to June, though the timing shifts from year to year.

For the beaches

Summer, December to February, on the calmer north coast.

Autumn or winter, when it is cool enough to hike all day.

Spring, when the honey and the lavender start.

For a quiet island

Winter. Summer is the busiest time.

Winter (June to August): joeys, whales and birds

Kangaroo Island Tourism calls winter its "in season". Days average about 15 °C and nights about 8 °C. It is the wettest time of year, with July the coldest month at Kingscote and the one with the most rain days.

It is also the best time for animals. Joeys leave the pouch, southern right whales pass the coast, and it is the best season to spot raptors and the glossy black cockatoo. Walks are at their best, with waterfalls running and orchids and early boronias in the bush.

Book the ferry early in winter too. SeaLink services its boats towards the middle of the year, and one may be out of service for a while.

Spring (September to November): wildflowers and walks

Spring averages 19 °C by day and 11 °C at night, with morning mists. The wildflowers bloom, and at dusk the kangaroos and wallabies come out onto the grass to feed.

The Ligurian bees start producing honey, and the lavender begins to bloom at Emu Bay. The whales are still passing until late October. It is a good season for a mix of walking, wildlife and tastings.

Summer (December to February): heat, flies and fur seal pups

Summer is the busiest season, averaging 24 °C by day. January is the warmest month at Kingscote, and rain is rare. The north coast is best for swimming, and Stokes Bay has rock pools for children.

Fur seal pups arrive in December and January below Admirals Arch, and it is mating season for seals and koalas. In the heat of the day the animals shelter in the shade. So the good wildlife hours are early and late, and the Best of KI day takes its lunch in a restaurant from December to February.

Summer is fire season. On days of catastrophic fire danger, Flinders Chase closes.

Autumn (March to May): calm seas and sea lion pups

Locals often name autumn as their favourite. Days average about 20 °C, and Kangaroo Island Tourism describes bright, clear days with low winds, less rain and calmer seas. That makes it a good time for the boats.

Sea lion pups may still be arriving at Seal Bay, depending on the year. Banksias, peas and heaths come into flower. By May the rain is returning, and whales start to arrive from mid-May.

When is the best time to visit?
Winter, June to August, for joeys, southern right whales and birdlife; January to June for sea lion pups; December and January for fur seal pups. Summer is hot, and daytime animals are harder to find.
Is summer too hot on Kangaroo Island?
January averages a 26.8 °C maximum at Kingscote, so it is warm rather than fierce. The heat sends the animals into the shade at midday, and summer is fire season. Go early and late in the day.
When are there fewer tourists?
Winter, from June to August. Kangaroo Island Tourism calls it the island's own season, with fewer visitors and more wildlife. Summer, December to February, is the most popular time.
When are sea lion pups born?
Any time from January to June, on an unusual 18-month breeding cycle. So each year is different, and the pupping months move from one season to the next.
When are the boat trips most likely to be cancelled?
In rough weather, which is most common in the wetter months from May to August. The operator refunds or moves you if it cancels. The 75-minute boat is non-refundable if you cancel yourself.
Is anything closed on Christmas Day?
Yes. The ferry does not run, Seal Bay is closed, and the SeaLink coach day does not operate. Plan your crossing around it.
