There is no bridge to Kangaroo Island, so every trip from Adelaide crosses the water. You drive or ride to the port, take the ferry, or fly. If you are comparing Kangaroo Island booking, this is how each route works and which trips carry the crossing for you.
Adelaide to Cape Jervis to Penneshaw: the route
The ferry leaves from Cape Jervis, at the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It lands at Penneshaw, on the island's eastern end. You get to the port by car or on a coach, and the crossing itself is short.
- Adelaide to Cape Jervis. About 1.5 hours by road, the South Australian Tourism Commission says.
- Check in at the terminal. Arrive at least 30 minutes before you sail.
- Cape Jervis to Penneshaw. The SeaLink ferry takes 45 minutes.
- Penneshaw onward. A tour pickup, a hire car, or the shuttle to Kingscote.
Book the ferry before anything else. Kangaroo Island Tourism advises you to lock in the crossing first and then book your bed to match. Boats fill at busy times, and a missed sailing can cost you a tour day.
The 45-minute crossing
SeaLink runs the ferry with two large vehicle and passenger boats. At peak times there are up to 12 return services a day, in both directions. You can cross on foot, with a car or with a caravan.

Fares and sailing times are SeaLink's, and they change with the season, so check them on SeaLink's own site when you book. If there is no room for your car, you can hire one on the island instead.
Flying to Kingscote instead
QantasLink flies direct from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport in about 30 minutes. It is the fastest way across. It also lands you closer to the tours, because most full days collect from Kingscote and American River hotels, and one sea lion day also collects at the airport.
Which one suits you? Fly if you are staying in
Kingscote and joining island tours. Take the ferry if you want your own car on the island,
or if you are booked on a trip that starts in Adelaide and crosses by boat.
Tours that start in Adelaide
Only the overnight trips start in the city. Every day tour here begins on the island. So if you want to be collected in Adelaide, you are choosing between the 2-day wildlife trip at $639 and the 3-day camping trip at $757.
The 3-day trip puts you on the 6:45am SeaLink coach from Adelaide Central Bus Station, and the return ferry is in the fare. The 2-day trip picks you up at an Adelaide hotel. Its listing says the ferry is not included and a cost adjustment is made on the day, so ask how the crossing works before you pay. Both need 6 days' notice for a full refund.

Arriving at Penneshaw without a car
Penneshaw is small, and there is no taxi or rideshare network on the island. Plan how you leave the terminal before you book the boat.
- The ferry shuttle
- Meets the morning and evening ferry and runs to Kingscote twice a day. Book it with Peninsula Coaches.
- The coach day
- SeaLink's full day collects from the KI Seafront hotel in Penneshaw and brings you back to Penneshaw by 6:45pm.
- The boats
- Both dolphin and seal trips leave from Penneshaw, one from Christmas Cove Marina and one from Howard Drive opposite it.
- The 4WD days
- The Best of KI and far-west days do not collect from Penneshaw or the ferry. Stay in Kingscote or American River for those.
The quad, buggy, e-bike and koala outings at Vivonne Bay start at their own bases, about 90 minutes' drive from Penneshaw, and none of them runs a shuttle. Without a car, pick a trip with pickup instead.
Can you do it in a day from Adelaide?
You can, but you do it yourself. There is no day tour here that starts in Adelaide. You would book the ferry or a flight, then a full day that collects on the island. The coach day is the one that collects in Penneshaw.
Kangaroo Island Tourism is frank about it: you see only some of the island in a day. It suggests three days for a small taste, five for the main sights and seven or more to see it properly. If one day is all you have, it advises a tour with a local guide, so you spend the day looking rather than driving.

Fly or ferry in early, join a day tour on the island, and leave that night.
Two days
Take the 2-day trip from Adelaide, or cross yourself and do a day tour each day.
Three days or more
Self-drive with a hire car, or take the 3-day camping trip with the crossing in the fare.
Arriving by cruise ship
Skip the ferry: the shore days meet the tenders in Penneshaw.
Biosecurity at the ferry
The island protects its bees and its farms, and the rules apply on the boat and the plane. Leave these on the mainland:
- Bees, bee-keeping equipment and honey products
- Unwashed potatoes
- Rabbits and foxes
- Declared weeds
If you want island honey, buy it once you land. The tastings day for cruise passengers stops at a honey farm for exactly that.
