Two answers matter more than the rest. First, there is no ticket to the island: you pay for the crossing, a tour and the park entries, and most full-day fares already carry the parks. Second, check where your day starts. The overnight trips start in Adelaide, the full days collect you from island hotels, and the outings at Vivonne Bay start at their own bases with no shuttle.
The rest covers Seal Bay’s paused beach access and its hours, the Flinders Chase fee, the Tour Pass, children, the snorkel water and what you may not bring on the ferry.
Is there a Kangaroo Island entry ticket?
No. The island has no gate and no entry ticket: what you pay for is the crossing, a tour or a hire car, and the park entries. Most full-day and multi-day fares already carry the park entries, so check the card before you buy them separately.
How much do the tours cost?
From $55 for the koala walk at Vivonne Bay and $62 for the 75-minute dolphin and seal boat, to $300–$318 for a small-group full day and $586–$757 for the overnight trips. Every price is in US dollars per person, as each operator lists it.
Do I need to book ahead?
Yes. The small-group days cap at 8 guests and the quads at 6, and the ferry needs its own booking. Travellers have missed a tour because the crossing was full, so book the ferry first and the tour second.
Can I cancel for a refund?
Most tours refund in full up to 24 hours ahead. The 2-day trip from Adelaide and the 3-day camping trip need 6 full days’ notice for a full refund, and the 75-minute coastal safari is non-refundable. Each card prints its own policy.
What is the Kangaroo Island Tour Pass?
The Kangaroo Island Tour Pass is a National Parks pass, A$95.00 an adult, that covers Flinders Chase National Park, the Seal Bay tour, Kelly Hill Caves and the lightstations at Cape Borda and Cape Willoughby for 12 months. You buy it in person on the island, and it may cost more than single entries if you visit only a couple of parks.
Which tour is best for a first visit?
A small-group full day that covers the sea lions, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch with park entry and lunch in the fare. The Best of KI day by 4WD does all of that with 8 guests at most, from a Kingscote or American River hotel.
Can I do a Kangaroo Island tour from Adelaide?
Yes, but only as an overnight trip: the 2-day wildlife adventure and the 3-day camping trip start in Adelaide. Every day tour starts on the island, so a day visitor takes the ferry from Cape Jervis first.
Is there a day tour I can join off the ferry?
Yes. The SeaLink coach day picks up at hotels in Penneshaw, Kingscote and American River and returns to Penneshaw at 6:45pm. The Hire a Guide days pick up in Kingscote and American River only, not at the ferry.
Are there shore excursions for cruise passengers?
Yes. Kangaroo Island Trails meets the tenders at Penneshaw with a scenic day and a tastings day, both aiming to be back by about 4:30pm. Several other full days say they are not suitable for cruise arrivals, and a weather cancellation of the tenders is not refunded on every listing.
What are the best wildlife tours?
The dolphin and seal boats from Penneshaw, the koala walk at Vivonne Bay, and the after-dark tours from Kingscote, which find wallabies, possums and little penguins. Each is short and built around the animals rather than the sights.
Can you still walk on the beach at Seal Bay?
Not at present. On 24 September 2026 the National Parks and Wildlife Service said access to the beach at Seal Bay is temporarily paused to protect the sea lion colony. The park stays open, and you see the colony from the 900-metre boardwalk with a roaming guide.
How do I get to Kangaroo Island?
By the SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, 45 minutes across, or by a 30-minute flight from Adelaide to Kingscote. There is no bridge to Kangaroo Island.
Are there taxis or Uber on Kangaroo Island?
No. There is no public transport, taxi or rideshare network on the island. A shuttle meets the morning and evening ferry and runs to Kingscote, and beyond that you need a car or a tour with pickup.

On every full-day and multi-day listing but one, the park fees are named in what the fare includes. The private Flinders Chase day flags admission in its itinerary only, so confirm it when you book.
Are prices per person?
Yes. Every fare is per person, the private tours included, so multiply by your group.
Why does the private Flinders Chase day cost so much more?
It is a private vehicle and guide for your group only, from your accommodation, with lunch and drinks in the fare. The small-group day to Flinders Chase costs about a third as much and caps at 8 guests.
Which tour is best with children?
The koala walk and the buggy ride suit young children. On the quads the minimum age is 6 to drive and 4 as a passenger, and the snorkel operator recommends over 9 for the swim. Most other listings state no minimum age.
Is an overnight tour worth it over a day tour?
Yes if you arrive without a car. The second day reaches the north coast and gives the far west time, while a single day spends much of its length on the road.
What is the difference between the 2-day tours?
One starts in Adelaide with the crossing arranged and a bed on the island. The other starts at an island hotel, and you book your own Kingscote room and your own ferry.
Is there a 3-day tour?
Yes, a swag-camping trip from Adelaide with the return ferry, park fees and all meals included. It leaves Adelaide Central Bus Station on the 6:45am coach.
Are there private tours?
Yes: a private Flinders Chase day from your accommodation, and a private nocturnal wildlife tour from Kingscote. Both are priced per person.
Do the Vivonne Bay activities pick you up?
No. The quads, the buggy, the e-bikes and the koala walk start at their bases, about 90 minutes’ drive from the Penneshaw ferry, and none runs a shuttle.
What should I wear on the quad bikes?
Closed-toe shoes and long pants, as the operator asks. Bring a jacket too: reviewers rode in rain and wind.
How cold is the water on the snorkel tour?
About 14 to 15 °C by the operator’s figure, and wetsuits are compulsory and supplied. Nobody swims near a dolphin pod with calves, and there is no refund if the animals do not come close.
Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?
Not on the boats or the night tours: the animals are wild. The koala walk and the daytime e-bike tour are the only listings that state a guaranteed koala sighting.
Is there phone signal on the island?
Telstra has the widest coverage; other networks drop out, and the west end has little or none. Download your maps before you drive.
What can I not bring to the island?
Bees, bee equipment and honey products, unwashed potatoes, rabbits, foxes and declared weeds. The island keeps them out to protect its bees and farms.
When is the best time to visit?
Winter, June to August, for joeys, southern right whales and birdlife; January to June for sea lion pups; December and January for fur seal pups. Summer is hot, and daytime animals are harder to find.
How big is the island?
It is about 155 km long and up to 55 km wide, Australia’s third-largest island. More than half of it is still native vegetation.
What are Seal Bay’s opening hours?
Seal Bay Conservation Park is open 9am to 5pm daily except Christmas Day; last entry 4pm. Tickets are sold at the visitor centre, and no booking is needed.
When are sea lion pups born?
Any time from January to June, on an unusual 18-month breeding cycle. So each year is different, and the pupping months move from one season to the next.
Is Seal Bay wheelchair accessible?
The 900-metre return boardwalk at Seal Bay is wheelchair accessible and runs to viewing platforms over the colony. Parking is free.
Can I walk down to Admirals Arch?
Yes, by a purpose-built boardwalk that is steep, with steps at the end. Long-nosed fur seals live on the rocks below Admirals Arch.
Did the 2019–20 fires close Flinders Chase?
The park burned in the 2019–20 summer bushfires and has reopened. Walks such as Platypus Waterholes have been rebuilt, and roads can still close after rain or in damaging winds, so check the park alerts before you drive to Flinders Chase.
